Pyka was recently honored as the first recipient of the ISTAT Sustainability Award. The recognition highlights the company’s commitment to integrating sustainability into the heart of its operations — designing and manufacturing fully electric, autonomous aircraft for crop dusting and cargo logistics. For Pyka, sustainability is not just a goal; it’s the very essence of what they do.
In an interview with Volker Fabian, the company’s chief commercial officer, he shared insights into the company’s journey, its achievements and the challenges it faces as it works to redefine aviation through sustainable innovation.
A Vision for Greener and Safer Aviation
Fabian joined Pyka three years ago, bringing extensive experience from the commercial aviation sector to his role in leading business development for the company’s two flagship products: Pelican Spray, an autonomous crop dusting aircraft, and its sister aircraft, Pelican Cargo, designed for autonomous cargo transport. With 80% commonality between the two aircraft, Pyka’s innovative design allows for adaptability while meeting different market needs. “The fundamental basis upon which the four co-founders decided to start Pyka was the idea that aviation could be made greener, safer and more cost-effective,” Fabian says. The founders envisioned an aviation future that mirrors other sectors like elevators or trains, which have evolved from manual operation to automation. For Pyka, the mission is clear: Take small, meaningful steps to decarbonize aviation and introduce autonomy in segments where it makes the most sense.
